III-1 & 2Image

Ancient Warfare III-1 (War as a livelihood: Mercenaries in the Ancient World) is on its way to subscribers worldwide. I have just seen the first copies and I think it's a particularly good looking and interesting issue. We’ve raised the bar a bit once again, hopefully we can keep it up for this third year of AW. The contents of this issue are:

  • Michael Taylor, 'Introduction to the theme'
  • Duncan Campbell, 'Theatre of War'
  • Bridget McDermott, 'Soldiers of Ta-Sety '
  • Joseph Pietrykowski, 'Generals for hire'
  • Ruben Post, 'Mercenaries from Crete'
  • Paul Bardunias, 'The battle of the Bagradas'
  • Alberto Pérez, 'Galatian Mercenaries'
  • Ross Cowan, 'Mercenaries in Imperial Rome'

We're quite well underway with Issue III-2 (Alexander’s funeral games: The Wars of the Successors). We will have an article on Philo of Byzantium, tactics and armies of the Successors, the battle of Gabiene and an introduction by Bob Bennett and Mike Roberts, authors of the recently published book The wars of Alexander’s Successors. To balance it all, there are features on gladiators, the Herculaneum soldier and more Vegetius!

Artist prints

ImageEarly in January the prints came off the presses and they look very good! Each of these would make a great decoration for your study, workshop or even living room. Johnny Shumate's 'Batavian auxiliary', Graham Sumner's 'Caesarian centurions' and Igor Dzis' 'Battle of Magnesia' are now available in our shop. They are each A4 sized and printed on 300 gsm paper with a professional printer’s finish.

Ancient Warfare Special

The ‘Varian disaster’ will be something special indeed: with 76 pages and ‘perfect binding’ this will be more like an A4 size highly illustrated booklet than a magazine. Planned content is as follows:

  • The sources
  • The search for the battlefield
  • Augustus' campaigns on the Rhine and Danube
  • Varus and Arminius
  • The campaign of 9 AD
  • The response of Rome
  • Roman fortifications in Germania Inferior and Germania Libera
  • Augustan legionaries
  • The Germanic warriors
  • The battlefield nowadays

This special is now available for pre-order at a discount and with free-shipping (until May 1st). And before anyone asks: no, this is not part of your regular subscription.

Reviewers wanted!

We are fortunate in the number of books published every year about warfare in the Ancient World. Unfortunately, there is simply not enough space on these pages to give every book its proper due. Half a page serves as a proper announcement, but not as a review and if we dedicated an entire page or more, we would never get through our backlog. Therefore we are going to publish the reviews in two versions: a short announcement in the magazine, as now, and a long one on the website. To do so, we need more reviewers. If you are interested, knowledgeable about (aspects of) warfare in the Ancient world and would like to contribute in exchange for a new book, please me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
