It's that time of year again where I ask the readership for suggestions for themes of next year. This method seems to work well even though, as I said last year, some make me "go bald with worry about appropriate photography..."
So, I'd like to start the discussion about themes for next year. I'll lay out some ground rules, you can post your suggestions in the comments from which I'll select three or four for each issue, on which you can then vote.
Of course the publisher reserves the right to change theme.
So, on to the ground rules:
- First: any military history topic is acceptable, provided it fits in the chronological and geographical constraints of AW. In other words, it has to fit Mediterranean/Near Eastern/European history between ca.3000 BC - 600 AD.
- Second: a good spread of subjects is important. Each year needs to have one-two Roman topics, one-two Greek/Hellenistic ones, one-two general topics and one Late Roman/Archaic Greek/Bronze Age topic.
- Third: there will very likely be another Special issue. The topic for such a Special needs to be narrowly focused and preferably linked to a commemoration or special exhibition.
I look forward to suggestions in the comment, and I'll start the list with the three runners-up of the vote last year:
- The army of Diocletian and his successors
- Elite troops of the Hellenistic Era
- Marius at War

You published a great and informative issue dealing with Rome and Parthia, so IMHO dealing with late Rome`s greatest adversery would be very appreciated.
You could include articles dealing with the the very advanced diplomacy between both powers, peace and trade treaties; mobile (maybe the battle of Callinicum 531 A) and siege (maybe the Siege of Amida by Shapur II) warfare.
The warriors: Sassanian Asavaran.
The Sassanian state: relationship between the king of kings an the Great Noble Clans.
Just some thoughts to that theme.

Also perhaps a "3rd Century Crisis" issue.
One the Greek side: perhaps a "Peloponnesian War" issue; and given the eternal popularity of all things Spartan, a "Sparta" issue might be in order, but hopefully without the red capes and leather underpants. A Sparta issue would be especially interesting if it contained articles beyond the 4th century, discussing the military affairs of Cleomenes and Nabis in addition to the classical glories of Leonidas and Brasidas.

- The army of Diocletian and his successors
- The Dacian wars. It would be great if they could include Domitians wars, as well as those of Trajan.
- The year of Four Emperors
- The Rise of Persia
- The Roman navy
On the civil wars you could fill years of issues, but some interesting characters (to me) are Sulla, Pompey and Sertorius. So maybe issues on
- Rome vs Mithradates (Sulla and Pompey), or
- The roman civil wars in Spain (Pompey and Sertorius).
some others:
- The Hittite empire/ warfare
- The Augustan Conquests
- The retreat of the ten thousand
- Wars/ Army of the Severans
For the special Marathon seems perfect.
Not really a part of the question, but some possible topics for 'the debate':
Fall or transformation? The end of the roman empire in the west
Is there a Western Way of War?
Thanks for allowing this input, much appreciated!
